Q: I hunt pigs in lignum and goats in timbered country that's intermixed with open clearings, The Ruger M77/44 carbine looks ideal for woods hunting, but will it reach out and bag an animal at 200 yards?

A: While the Ruger 77/44 carbine is suitable for brush and woods hunting, there are any number of guns better suited for clean kills on feral animals at longer ranges. The little carbine has several strikes against it for your use. When zeroed 3 inches high at 100yds with the 240gn factory load, the bullet drops about a foot at 200 yds, where retained energy has plummeted to about 600 ft/lbs. I did test one of these carbines a few years ago and accuracy averaged a shade under 3MOA. The Ruger was not designed for precision shooting at long range, but it ain't to be sneezed at within 150 yds
