Top Ipswich shooter John Hislop is all concentration on the 500 yard mound at Crows Nest on Sunday.

Downs shooter takes tight Crows Nest contest

Darling Downs Rifle Club member Rob McMaster held his nerve to win a tight season-opening Prize Shoot at Crows Nest on Sunday.

He was in a bunch of five shooters who had dropped just a single shot going into the last range at 500 yards – and the only one to keep his record intact with a possible 50.

In tricky wind conditions, top local shooter Ashley Bidgood fired an equal high score 50.7 at the last to snatch second after dropping shots at each of the previous two ranges.

Rob posted an aggregate 149 with 10 centre bulls while Ashley’s tally of 17 centres put him ahead of two other shooters who also finished on 148 – Lee Robinson from Beaudesert with 14 centres and Rodney Prayle from Maryborough with 10.

A good crowd of 70 shooters from central Queensland to northern NSW took part in the Crows Nest competition.

Ashley Bidgood started strongly with a possible 75.12 to win a 15-shot sweepstakes on Saturday. His father Max was a close third on 75.8, just a centre bull adrift of Andrew Wilson of Narrabri, who finished with 75.9.

Marian Rifle Club visitor Frank Chester won the B Grade competition on Sunday with Chris Neave from Southern Downs taking the C Grade title.

Tony Berry from Beaudesert posted two possible 60s in the strong F Open scope class, and held off Dalby’s Cameron McEwan by only three centre bulls after both finished on 177.

Narrabri visitor Alex Wilson was a clear winner of the F Standard A Grade competition.

The next prize shoot is at Beaudesert on March 3.
