Leica makes great binoculars as well as superb riflescopes. We test and a new ER 2.5-10×42 riflescope which uses the most up-to-date technology to produce the best possible hunting optics.
Few binoculars match up well with such prestigious German brands as Leica, but the company’s previous foray into the scope market proved abortive. Their Ultravid scopes were made by Leupold with only the lenses coming from Germany. The Leicas featured long eye relief – something lacking in a good many European scopes. But for some unknown reason Leica’s hybrid European/American scopes never caught on and were soon phased out.
Now Leica is back in the scope business with a pair of new ER riflescopes – a 2.5-10×42 and a 3.5-14×42 – designed and made in Solms Germany. They are optically brilliant, perfectly engineered and have the longest eye relief in their class. It appears that Leica gained some practical knowledge during their brief relationship with Leupold. Not only did the optics of the test 2.5-10×42 offer a brilliant, sharp image, but low light performance, including shooting toward the setting sun was outstanding.
These ER scopes are built on a 30mm one-piece tube of rugged aircraft quality aluminium alloy with a black matte finish. Their equally rugged internal mechanical construction guarantees a constant zero and precise adjustments for repeatable accuracy. The adjustment turrets have 1/4 MoA clicks and are centred in the long 160mm straight part of the tube providing maximum flexibility for mounting on both short and long actions without the need for extension rings. Long centre tubes allow plenty of latitude for fore-and-aft movement of the scope in the rings to gain optimum eye relief – something sadly lacking in many short-tubed scopes.
