Q: I lucked onto a H&R Model 340 in .30-06 still in the original factory box and unfired which I bought for a silly price. I have a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x scope, but need a mount. My local gunshop couldn’t find scope bases listed for it in either the Leupold or Weaver catalogues. The closest I have come to a description on this action is the Mauser Mark X which is just like the FN Mauser and the Zastava Mauser. Will bases for one of these actions fit my H&R Model 340?

A: I had one of those Model 340s and it is a fine rifle. Scope mounts pose no problem since the action is the Mark X Mauser, also known as Zastava Mauser or Interarms Mauser which is made in Bosnia. It takes the same bases as the FN

Mauser as well. H&R bought the actions from Interarms and fitted the barrels and a nicely shaped walnut stock. My .338 Win. Mag., is built on one of the Interarms actions. Your gunshop should have known this.
