Firearms Amendment Shelved

The Firearms and Weapons Legislation Amendment Bill has fortunately hit a massive roadblock, with a parliamentary committee recommending against it in its current form.

The Bill would have effectively made it illegal to own anything that could be used to make or repair a firearm – basically any hardware item.

The committee highlighted issues with an overly broad scope, lack of defence for licensed firearms users maintaining or repairing their firearms, and concerns about police over-reach in relation to powers under the proposed legislation.

Many groups, parties and associations fought hard to stop this Bill; however, the fight is not over as anti-gun groups continue the push for tighter gun laws through stealth.

The report can be found here.
